Cool People Care

It's what everyone's talking about... no, not Brangelina -- it's gas prices. What good ideas can we share to help save money and CO2 emissions?

Although it's been the political joke of the week, proper tire inflation actually does increase fuel economy and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

Indeed it does. We mention this in our book... I just checked and inflated my tires last week... And in case you missed it, a quick tip from Sam...

We live in the suburbs, but are planning to move much closer to our jobs next summer. Until then, since suburb almost inevitably means operating the monster of low gas-mileage (no, it's neither the Hummer nor a Ferrari, it's the riding mower), I let the green grass grow until we almost get a citation from the friendly neighborhood association

Be strong Thomas... don't let the neighborhood association get you down...

I've started carpooling to work, and I'm lucky enough to live in neighborhood where I can walk to almost everywhere I need to be: church, grocery, girlfriend's condo, hardware store, library, grocery, Blockbuster... all within one mile. The past two weeks I've logged 40 miles on my pedomoter.

Sounds like you'll score fairly high...

I may be a bit late to this discussion, but I've noticed that just driving responsibly can save on gas.

I recently started a new job in which part of the training was learning how to drive according to the "Smith System". People like to drive in packs, and falling back and not trying to jam your way through traffic saves on gas and if you are driving all day, you wouldn't lose more than a couple of minutes by slowing up a bit.

Any other info on the "Smith System"?

Thomas;

Since living and working near our jobs in the city of Boston, my husband and I got rid of our car. This is still not a mainstream choice, but we feel making unpopular choices sets an example to give others courage that it is possible to take those chances and function normally. Kim from Boston

I say screw the mainstream... thanks for setting a positive example for others... a smart man told me once when talking about hybrids, I asked "will your next car be a hybrid?" and he replied "my next car will be a bicycle..."
