I've started carpooling to work, and I'm lucky enough to live in neighborhood where I can walk to almost everywhere I need to be: church, grocery, girlfriend's condo, hardware store, library, grocery, Blockbuster... all within one mile. The past two weeks I've logged 40 miles on my pedomoter.
I may be a bit late to this discussion, but I've noticed that just driving responsibly can save on gas.
I recently started a new job in which part of the training was learning how to drive according to the "Smith System". People like to drive in packs, and falling back and not trying to jam your way through traffic saves on gas and if you are driving all day, you wouldn't lose more than a couple of minutes by slowing up a bit.
